This was the cheesecake from my wedding.
I love cake….but my husband doesn’t. When we were planning our wedding our banquet coordinator told us that she needed to know what type of cake we wanted and we honestly didn’t know. My husband was kind enough to tell me he didn’t care what I picked since he wasn’t going to eat it anyway, but I didn’t want to exclude him from what I believe is an important part of a wedding. That led me to start thinking of alternatives to the traditional wedding cake. It was really interesting in my searching to see what other deserts people have used in replacement of the traditional wedding cake. I’ve shared them below.
Cheesecake – this is what we decided to do. We both love cheesecake. We had a very intimate group of only 20 so we served off the single cake, however for larger receptions you could do a cheesecake table of tons of different flavors, even different toppings. The ideas are endless.
Cupcakes – there are plenty of decorative stacking ideas your baker can do with cupcakes
Cinnabon – one couple’s first date was a movie and Cinnabon afterwards. They decided to make a tower of Cinnabon cinnamon rolls in lieu of a wedding cake. Plates of minibons were then served at their guest tables. This obviously could be done with anytype of cinnamon rolls, not just Cinnabon brand.
Ice Cream Cake – my cousin’s family owned a Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream store and decided to have an Ice Cream Cake. There were 5 different flavors of delicious Ben & Jerry’s ice cream for guests to choose from.
Cherries Jubilee & Bananas Foster – another one of my cousins didn’t want any thing that even looked like a cake! They decided to serve these two great deserts to their guests instead. To replace the traditional cutting of the cake they stood in the middle of the dance floor as the chef rolled out his cart with one of each desert and they lit them on fire. What a great idea!
Pie – one couple did a pie buffet. They cut into and fed each other their favorite pie and then had a great spread of different types of pies for guests to choose from.
Fruit Cake – yes, we typically associate this with Christmas time, but did you know that fruited cakes were a symbol of fertility and prosperity and in England were served as the wedding cake? There’s actually allot of history to the wedding cake and the different myths and superstitions that come with it. That’s for another blog though
Chocolate Truffles – another couple boxed chocolate truffles and then stacked the boxes to resemble the different tiers of a wedding cake. You could actually do this with any type of candy in pretty boxes.
Tower of Donuts – yes, who doesn’t love donuts. You can have different flavors and please everyone.
These are just a few ideas I came across when researching for my own wedding. Look into your own cultural history for ideas as well.
